    Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a Major in Criminal Justice

    Overview:

    Mazoon College, in view of its mission to address the higher education needs of the community is offering Bachelor Program in Sociology with a major in Criminal Justice. This program is prepared with the assistance from the Purdue University, North-West USA. This course will enable the graduates to apply knowledge related to criminal law, corrections, law enforcement and criminology as well as understand how criminal justice institutions are managed. Also, to develop the skills necessary to serve in modern society and demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior and sensitivity when working with workforce.

    Admission criteria:

    General Education Diploma (Grade 12 Certificate)  or its equivalent approved by the Ministry of Education and the student have to pass the General Foundation program (GFP) offered by the Mazoon College or its equivalent approved by the Ministry of Higher Education.

    The Program objectives are:

    • To provide quality instruction in undergraduate level related to criminal justice courses that include the wide range of sociological and technical subjects found within this discipline.
    • To ensure that students completing the Criminal Justice major requirements are able to demonstrate mastery of the various theories and research methods that are relevant to criminal justice.
    • To guarantee that students will be able to demonstrate mastery of the important concepts in criminal law, corrections, law enforcement and criminology as well as understand how criminal justice institutions are organized and managed.
    • To provide proper venue for teaching students to think creatively and critically in resolving issues related to crime and criminal justice.
    • To ensure that students acquire the skills necessary to serve in modern society and demonstrate professionalism and ethical behavior and sensitivity when working with multicultural workforce. 
    • To provide internship opportunities to help prepare students for career success as well as for graduate school.

     

    Academic Plan:

    The proposed program is a four-year degree course spread over in eight semesters and the students have to complete 120 credit hours. The program structure is composed of major courses in sociology and criminal justice in various content areas such as social problems, race and ethnic relations, child and family welfare, criminal justice system, law enforcement, corrections, criminal law and criminal investigations. Core courses are drawn from multiple disciplines such as political science, psychology, mathematics and statistics, English composition and technical writing courses, computer operation and many others.  Students have to take seventeen courses from the major specialization area (Sociology and Criminal Justice) which will enhance students’ knowledge on criminal justice system, improved analytical, creative and critical thinking skills for their overall development. Students have to study free electives which they can choose from the various courses offered as well as the course on Omani society and Entrepreneurship based on the norms of the Ministry of Higher Education.
