An Educational Technology Workshop in the General Foundation Program
It is needless to mention that computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is absolutely effective in the acquisition of English as a second language (ESL). To update its teachers with the latest innovations in educational technology, the General Foundation Program conducted a workshop entitled Using Technology in the ESL Classroom on 15th May 2017 in Hall B on the Second Floor. The workshop was delivered by Ms. Hemani Naran, a teacher trainer and an English Language Teaching expert from Pearson Education.
The workshop has shed lights on educational technology benefits, challenges, channels, and practical implications. Additionally, the workshop facilitator has indicated that technology in ESL classrooms should be characterized by authenticity, interaction, and reliability and that educational technology is a means not an end. Furthermore, a particular focus has been on including using technology in connection with the textbooks that are currently used in the preparatory English language course at Mazoon College. It has been confirmed that two of the most crucial advantages of using technology in English Language Teaching are increasing students’ engagement and promoting learner autonomy.
The workshop was interactive and dynamic. The central issues related to educational technology were debated in pairs and groups. The participants drew on their diverse teaching experiences which led to enriching the discussion. The participants have come out of the workshop convinced that educational technology is constantly evolving and that they have to cope with it for the sake of their own professional development and for the benefit of their students.
At the end of the workshop, Dr. Jamal Salman, the Dean of Mazoon College, presented Ms. Hemani Naran, the workshop facilitator, with a certificate and gifts as tokens of acknowledgement and appreciation. Mazoon College would also like to extend its gratitude to Ms. Natasha Arain, Pearson Education Regional Manager for organizing the above-mentioned event. To conclude, it is worth stating that Mazoon College looks forward to future cooperation in the fields of teacher training and curriculum development with Pearson Education.
